Social Bookmarking

1225274637_85fac883b1Social Bookmarking is a way to store and share bookmarks of web pages on the internet. There are many sites in which your articles can be categorized, tagged, voted and commented on.

The term “social bookmarking” was coined by de.licio.us and soon many sites began to develop. These sites are a great way for a person who is blogging this or blogging that to gain exposure and readership. Often, these sites drive web traffic to the blog where they originated. When you sign up, you will make a profile. Here is my Technorati Profile for example. Then you can vote for articles you like.

BloggingThis has links to Del.icio.us, Digg, Furl, Google, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Slashdot, Simpy, Technorati, Windows Live! and Yahoo after each post so you can vote easily.

Web Proxy: What Is It?

Web based proxy servers allow you to hide your IP address from web sites so that you can surf anonymously. Simply enter your URL ex. http://example.com and you are directed to the site. There is no software to install and no browser configuration necessary.

Web proxies are not new. A proxy is a server that forwards requests to other servers. People have used them for years to bypass network filters and access the internet that is restricted at work or school. Traffic is routed through an anonymous domain, then to the web site.

“Privacy is not a crime and anonymity is not morally ambiguous or wrong, they are your right.” -Zelune The Worlds Fastest Proxy Script. There are advocates who think the anonymity on the web is wrong. Keep in mind, though, anyone on the internet can pull up a map to your town using your IP, but not when you go through a web proxy.

It is easy to give it a try. Simply follow one of these links and enter a web address and browse. Pogo Proxy and Seminole Proxy. They both use the Zelune script which is very fast. Take it with you. You can use these addresses from any computer, anywhere. Unlike many web proxies, you can surf You Tube as well.

The intention of this article is not to empower “black-hat” uses for the web proxy, but possibly introduce or educate the use of a web proxy. At BloggingThat.com we encourage you to use common sense and not get fired from work or in trouble at school.

Inbox Zero (Implemented)

A couple of months ago I received an email with a link to 43Folders and the optimism of gaining control of my email inbox. After watching Merlins: Inbox Zero Presentation I began to realize the concept of this idea. I feel I have taken back a lost piece of my life. You can also download the PDF slides of the presentation here.

The most powerful notion is of deciding what to do with each email immediately and never having to read it more than once. I also enjoy the pre-canned messages for fast, easy response. If you only commit to one concept, you will be better off than before.

Inbox Zero Remember, an email is not a little hug.

Merlin Mann is the creative force behind 43Folders amidst other endeavors like The Merlin Show and 5ives which is a list of five things. Be sure to check them out. Look at his bio here. You can email Merlin Mann here to thank him.

Equalize Your MP3 Player

Do you wish you didn’t have to adjust the volume on your MP3 player each time a different song comes on? MP3Gain is an open source software that can help. MP3Gain does not just do peak normalization, as many normalizers do. Instead, it does some statistical analysis to determine how loud the file actually sounds to the human ear.

Also, the changes MP3Gain makes are completely lossless. There is no quality lost in the change because the program adjusts the mp3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding.

There are two ways to analyze, track gain and album gain. If you have a mix of songs, track gain will adjust the levels equally. If you chose album gain, you keep the intergrity of the album and the quiet songs stay quiet while the loud songs stay loud.

Here is the download if you want to get right to it.

Music: A Better Way Than P2P

I was looking at YouTube the other day and came across a neat way to better use Google’s search functions to find music for free download.

I like the single .mp3’s but what I really want is the entire album, for free. Best of all, the download is not through a P2P and limited in bandwidth. One could download sixty albums in one day, not waiting for connections or users who have the file to be online. Simply type this in to your search… intitle:”index.of” (mp3|mp4|avi) name.of.album -htm -html -php -asp -cf -jsp Replace name.of.album with your target. What you are doing is searching for peoples’ site index, but only music. Now, you will get some commercial sites that you should ignore. What you want to see is this…

Index of /Music/Green Day/Kerplunk

Name Last modified Size Description

Below will be the songs that make up the Green Day Kerplunk album. Right click them and “save as”. Don’t forget to adjust your path to Index of /Music to see what other musical jems they may have in their directories. I love google.
