Ode to Hot Boiled Peanuts

A Brief History

Hot boiled peanuts can be linked back as far as the civil war, when union General William T. Sherman (1820-1891) led troops on a march through Georgia.

2006 - On May 1, 2006, Gov. Mark Sanford came to York County and officially signed into law, H.4585, to make the boiled peanut South Carolina’s official state snack food. Tom Stanford, a Winthrop University graduate, came up with the idea in a government class because he likes boiled peanuts.

SECTION 1. The General Assembly finds that boiled peanuts are a delicious and popular snack food that are found both in stores and roadside stands across the State, and this unique snack food is defined as peanuts that are immersed in boiling water for at least one hour while still in the shell. The General Assembly further finds that this truly Southern delicacy is worthy of designation as the official state snack food.

My recipe: (Nebraskan Twist) Go Big Red! Ok, i’m done.

Note: We’re not setting up a road-side hot boiled peanut stand. Quality not quantity.

  • Place one pound of green peanuts in a Crockpot. (Find peanuts in the vegetable section.)
  • Fill Crockpot to the top with water and set to high. (For Nebraskans, “Full Blast!”)
  • Add 1/4 cup of table salt.
  • Let it cook, only topping off the water as needed for one day (24 hours)
  • Add a cup of soy sauce. (This is where you could add cayenne pepper for Cajun.)
  • Lower heat to warm or medium. Keep the water level up as needed.
  • Cook for one more day. They are done when there is jell inside the shell.
  • Enjoy!

Mike Hears a Who

There has been a strange scratching noise in the garage office, AKA “garoffice”. It is coming from the floor near the walls. I sit at a table, on a barstool type chair and gaze at my PC while listening and talking on conference calls, calculating, planning and doing research. The garoffice is a fully networked, VOIP epicenter.

Garoffice - Garage Office

Each time I hear the scratching I know that it must be near my feet. A couple times I have banged my knees hard in the true meaning of “knee jerk reaction” to avoid inevitable chomping. Today, it is gone. I was getting ready to go all CSI on it. I think it was one of those hard shelled beetles. I’m glad it’s gone for now.
